In "Invisible Alcoholics: Women and Alcohol,"  Marian Sandmaier explores differences in treatment for women, social attitudes towards them, and contributing factors to their drinking - also looks at the impact of class, sexual preference, etc.   Both this and Larson's book (see below) mention AA but that's not their focus (in fact Sandmaier's book lists SOS and Rational Recovery as resources)
