Service
Center Cleanup Saturday,
November 28
Save the date.
If you've been to the
Service
Center, you know the
office is a mess. And
that's a shame since we are in such a
grand old building at
1440 Broadway in
Oakland.
So we are having an Office Rehab Party on Saturday, November
28. Time is TBD but
probably most of the day – and we may go into Sunday as well.
Cleaning.
Stacking. Reordering.
All the usual stuff.
And we need volunteers to help.
This is a great way to meet Marty and the other LifeRing
people and to give a little back without making huge commitment.
(Of course, we'd take that too...)
The 12-th
Street Oakland BART Station is just outside. Free
parking is available on Saturdays at the garage on
Clay between 14th and 15th.
Rumor has it there may be pizza.
If you are interested, drop a note to the
Service
Center or keep
watching for more details.

on Saturday June 5 and Sunday June 6.

We also expect to spend a fair amount of time talking about
LifeRing's future, its leadership, and its organization, following
on last Congress's creation of the LifeRing Expansion Committee.
Their report should be out for discussion in a few weeks.
And, of course, there will be social gatherings as well.
Stay tuned for more details.

LifeRing in the
Park
... in Fremont CA
The Wednesday Fremont meeting had a problem a
few weeks ago. Their
meeting place, Joe's Corner, closed.
The LifeRing was homeless!
Ever resourceful, the Fremont group is meeting this summer at the nearby
Niles Community
Park at the corner of H and 3rd street.
Co-convenor Dru reports, "We are at a grove of trees with
tables and benches easily seen from the beginning of the parking
lot." (On the link, the
arrow is not exactly where the meeting is.)
For now it's working out well.
The meeting is well-attended. The group has a nice range of
clean and sober time from months to half a decade.
Co-convenors Dru and Ted are working a winter home for the
meeting, but for right now, LifeRing is enjoying a
California
summer in the park.

San Francisco LifeRing
at the Alano Club!
The Alano
Club of San Francisco
at
1748 Market Street identifies itself
as "a nonprofit organization that offers the recovering alcoholic
and addict a place to gather with people who understand the program
and the process of recovery." As that and the name suggest,
the Club has a strong 12-step orientation
even though it is not officially affiliated with AA or other
12-step organizations. The Club hosts 12-step meetings plus a
variety of clean and sober activities.
And it is the site of the latest LifeRing!
Njon W., who arranged the meeting, writes
that he learned the Club had space available.
Njon writes, "When I met with the club owner Mike, he
mentioned that one of his volunteers had attended and said good
things about a LifeRing meeting. When I met with him to turn in our
paperwork, it was clear that he had thoroughly checked us out online
and even knew about the "How Was Your Week" format.
The few AA members I met there also expressed an interest in
learning more about LifeRing and I got only positive feedback and
encouragement." While
there are some big differences in approach, it's clear a certain
solidarity among those in recovery and the common goal to reach out
and help are a work here.
The meeting starts Sunday.
10:00 AM. Suite 202 at the Club.
Njon also invites LifeRing members to take advantage of the Alano Club on-site
Cafe. [6/15/09]

Craig W.'s Excellent
Expo Adventure
Craig W, convenor for the LSRSafe Yahoo
Group wrote up his experiences at the May 9-10 LifeRing Expo and
Congress. Craig
introduces his story like this:
This report will be way too long, and way too
focused on my personal idiosyncrasies, but I hope it will capture
the flavor of my experience at the 2009 LifeRing Expo. We're all
unique in our weirdnesses, but maybe some of you will identify with
mine.
It's an epic story of arduous travel,
culinary delights, camaraderie, and fascinating meetings (really!).
We've posted a copy here on the 2009 LifeRing Expo in Review
page.
Check out Craig's
story here. [5/21/09]

LifeRing Partners on the Web
LifeRing Partners, the new organization
tentatively organized at the 2008 LifeRing Congress, now has it's
own web page:
http://www.unhooked.com/partners/index.htm.
The group has published its draft Mission Statement. The statement
begins:
LifeRing Partners is an association of clean and
sober people who are affected by their personal relationships with
substance abusers. The group is an affiliate of LifeRing Secular
Recovery, which is based on the principles of Sobriety, Secularity,
and Self-Help. LifeRing Partners is based on the principles of
Secularity, Self-Help, and Boundaries.
The purpose of LifeRing Partners is to allow members to meet
regularly, face-to-face, with other people dealing with substance
abusers, whether alcohol, street drugs, or prescription drugs (which
can also be “street drugs”).
LifeRing Partners
will have a room and a time slot set aside on the program at the
upcoming
LifeRing Expo. [4/21/09]

LifeRing Author Speaks at Mountain
Vista
Farm
Author
Martin Nicolaus
(Empowering
Your Sober Self, Recovery by
Choice) spoke about LifeRing April 16 to a meeting of staff at
the Mountain Vista Farm
in Glen Ellen, California, one of the
oldest and best known rustic inpatient treatment programs in the
region. Formerly known as Truman's, the center has been in
continuous operation for more than 50 years. It is well known for
its commitment to the 12-step approach, but, as Executive Director
Lee Hamilton explained at the outset of the staff meeting, a
significant number of clients are not connecting with 12-step
groups, for one or another reason, and it would be helpful to have
more information about alternative recovery approaches. Members of
the counseling staff listened attentively to Marty's 40-minute
presentation, and asked important questions. The atmosphere was
friendly and lively. Prior to the meeting, Marty was a guest of the
facility for lunch. The program is set on a beautiful hillside in
the Sonoma
County wine country, about a 90-minute
drive from San Francisco.

New Delegate's
Briefing Ready for '09 Congress
A
new edition of the Delegate's Briefing, an information bulletin for
prospective attendees at the Delegates' Assembly May 10, is off the
press and will be mailed out to LifeRing meeting convenors this
week. The bulletin
contains introductory information about the Assembly (a/k/a the
Congress proper), suggestions for making meeting reports, an outline
of a proposal for organizational expansion, information about the
Board of Directors election, and a proposed agenda for the Sunday
morning session. A PDF
copy is available online
here.
Because the original is
sized for 11x17" paper, printing the PDF on regular letter-size
paper will make for eyestrain.
If you're a LifeRing meeting convenor and you haven't
received your copy via snail mail by Monday April 6, the LifeRing Service
Center probably doesn't
have your snail mail address.
Shoot an email to
service@lifering.org or phone 1-800-811-4142 and a copy will be
mailed to you. [4/3/09]

LifeRing on the Web
Now Has 2 Front Doors
Until now, the only way to access the LifeRing
home page was to go to
www.unhooked.com. As
of this week, there's also a second, new way to get to the LifeRing
home page: www.lifering.org.
We've been advised by PR professionals -- and this makes good
sense -- that seekers on the web, and newcomers, will have an easier
time getting to us if our web address matches the name of our
organization. So, now
you can get to LifeRing by typing either
www.lifering.org or
www.unhooked.com --both go to
the same place. We'll
keep the www.unhooked.com
address active for the indefinite future, but we'll gradually
feature www.lifering.org more
prominently. Meanwhile,
www.lifering.com remains the
address for the LifeRing Press online bookstore.
Got it? Lifering.org for the LifeRing organization,
lifering.com for the LifeRing commerce site.

Northern Cal
Schedule Goes to Larger Paper
With the opening of the new San Bruno LifeRing
at the Veterans' Administration Clinic, the number of Northern
California LifeRing meetings has grown too large to fit on a regular
letter-size sheet of paper.
The printing on the schedule was already down to six point
type, just about requiring a magnifying glass to read.
Any smaller and readers would need a microscope.
The new schedule printed on March 30 is on legal size paper.
The print is at a luxurious 8-point size.
There's room for a few more meetings before we have to shrink
the type size again. You can download the
3/30 schedule in PDF
here. See the Meeting
Page for the most current list. Print copies will be mailed to
Northern California addresses on the LifeRing mailing
list within a week. [4/3/09, updated 7/19/09]]

Library Journal:
New LifeRing Book "Highly recommended"
Library Journal recently reviewed
Empowering Your Sober Self: The
LifeRing Approach to Addiction Recovery in its "Xpress
Reviews—First Look at New Books" section:

Self: The LifeRing Approach to Addiction Recovery. Jossey-Bass.
Apr. 2009. c.288p. illus. index. ISBN 978-0-470-37229-6. $26.95.
PSYCH
Verdict: This introduction to LifeRing Secular
Recovery’s principles philosophy for overcoming addiction—without
the religious underpinnings of most 12-step programs—will be well
received by those seeking support on their road to recovery. Highly
recommended for university libraries supporting the helping
professions and larger public libraries.
Background: Nicolaus (Recovery by Choice),
founder and CEO of LifeRing Secular Recovery, a nonreligious
addiction recovery treatment alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous,
provides an engaging guide for individuals and addiction treatment
professionals seeking nonspiritual support and strategies. The
author distinguishes LifeRing Secular Recovery from 12-step
programs, includes numerous testimonials from members, and focuses
on informing readers rather than converting them.—Dale Farris, Groves, TX

Sobriety,
Without the Sermon
Last month, RedwoodAge.com, a news and
commentary website, talked with Craig W., LifeRing's on-line
coordinator for the
LSRsafe, LifeRing
E-pals, and LifeRing SoberLiving online groups.
The article begins
Perhaps no one in Craig’s
rural community suspected he struggled with a drinking problem.
The 61-year-old book store owner would quit drinking from time to
time, but soon enough wade back in, feeling calm and in control. “I
would forget and say, ‘No problem,‘” he said. “Especially at
Christmas.”
Craig thought more than once about joining
Alcoholics Anonymous,
but the faith piece of the
12-step program alienated him. “AA people think it’s
resistance to quitting,“ said Craig. “It’s not. It’s resistance to
the program.”
Surfing the Internet, he struck the
magic combination of words that brought up a secular recovery
program. At Unhooked.com,
he found LifeRing, which began in the San Francisco Bay Area
and has spread since its inception in 1997 to communities around the
nation, including the Pacific Northwest
where Craig lives.
Check out the rest
here.

LifeRing Partners
Launches in Victoria BC
LifeRing Partners, a group for friends,
family, and loved ones of those in recovery, has launched!
Convenor Bill and co-convenor Barbara lead a meeting at the
Burnside Gorge Community
Centre at 7:00 PM Mondays in
Victoria, British Columbia
at
471 Cecelia Rd.
Bill reports
the meetings – not yet widely advertised – have been small but
lively with lots of productive discussion.
The group has adopted the "How Was Your Week" format and has
tried as much as possible to stick to the principles laid out in the
LifeRing convenor's handbook.
For more information on the
Victoria
group contact Bill or Barbara via
e-mail or call
250-818-1652.
LifeRing has had many inquires over the
years about a group for friends and family and supports the
LSR-LO
(Loved Ones) e-mail group.
As mentioned here, the latest effort
to kick off a face-to-face group came with the 2008 LifeRing
Congress. A steering
committee made up of folks who attended that Congress session that
took it from there. The
result is LifeRing Partners, an association of clean and sober
people who are affected by someone else's use.
We hope other meetings will follow in other areas.
If you are interested – especially if you are interested in
convening such a group – please contact the
Service Center via
e-mail or via phone at
1-800-811-4142 or 510-763-0779.
