  Welcome to the

The San Francisco Bay Area is justly noted for its scenery, good restaurants, great entertainment and friendly people.  The area across the Bay from San Francisco proper is known as the East Bay and that's where the Congress will be located.  Oakland and Berkeley still are remembered as the home of the Black Panthers and the origin of the Free Speech movement but both towns have long since moved on.  We urge you to sample our towns when you come to the Congress.  -- Katie F.  Lodging Coordinator

Airport Links:  Both the Oakland and the San Francisco airports are easily accessible by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).  The fare from the San Francisco Airport (SFO) to downtown Berkeley is $5.15 and from Oakland Airport (OAK) to downtown Berkeley is $1.75.  BART is a very viable option for those with luggage on wheels.  BART is closed from midnight to 6 am.  For those needing a door-to-door van, Bayporter Express is $25 from SFO and $21 from OAK to Berkeley (minus gratuity).  They can be reached at 877-467-1800 or www.bayporter.com.  For these fares, they go to any address in Berkeley.

Lifering Best Housing Bet -- the YMCA.  The Y has been recently renovated and the hotel may be spartan but the price of $39 for a single can't be beat.  Located only 2 blocks from Berkeley BART at the intersection of Allston Way and Milvia, the Y is right in the center of theaters (live and movie), restaurants, public transportation (BART and bus), and 4 blocks from the conference location.  The bathroom is down the hall, no TV and probably no phone.  The lobby has a kitchenette for cooking and an Internet lounge.  Guests have access to excellent exercise facilities.  Parking is 1 block away at $12 for 24 hours (better yet, don't bring a car).  510-848-6800, no web registration.

Hotel Shattuck is a little more upscale and is 1 block from the YMCA at the corner of Shattuck Ave and Allston Way.  510-845-7300, www.hotelshattuckplaza.com.  A single is $79 to $99 depending on your ability to dicker.  Parking at the same lot as the Y.  If you need TV, phones and a private bathroom, this is a good balance between location and price.  The hotel has an Afghani restaurant I'd love to try.

The Hotel Durant [ BOOKED FULL ON CONGRESS DATES ] is even more upscale and is rated two diamonds by the AAA.  It is just off of Telegraph Avenue on Durant Avenue and is 2 blocks south of the UC Berkeley campus.  510-845-8981.  www.hoteldurant.com.  A single is $140 but you can probably talk them down to the University rate of $120 per night.  BART is a 1/2 - 2/3 mile walk and the bus service is good.
