What are PDF files?
PDF stands for "Portable Document
Format." To read these files, you need Adobe Reader Version
6.0 or better. Adobe Reader is a free utility program that works inside your
browser, and also works independently offline. Your document will be an
exact copy of
the original. You can use Adobe Reader to view the document, to
fill in fields, save it to your disk, and
print the document on your printer.
How can I get Adobe Reader?
You may already have Adobe Reader Version 6.0 or
better installed on
your computer. It comes pre-installed on many newer
machines. If you already have it installed, Adobe Reader will spring into action
automatically from within your browser whenever it is needed. You
do not need to make any special entries or adjustments.
If your machine goes into "File Download"
mode (a dialog box asks whether you want to save the document to disk) it
means you don't have Adobe Reader installed on your machine.
Download
Adobe
Acrobat Reader then try again. When you download Adobe Reader,
it installs and configures itself with your browser
automatically. Adobe Reader is free.
Many of the PDF files on unhooked.com require Adobe
Reader Version 6.0 or better. If you experience difficulty
opening, printing, or filling in fields (where provided) on PDF files,
upgrade to Adobe Reader 6.0.
Printing
LifeRing Brochures and Flyers from a PDF File
Most of the LifeRing brochures are available for
download as PDF files. If you want, you can print them and fold
them yourself, instead of buying them ready-made from LifeRing Press.
You can also download flyers, directional signs, door signs, and other
useful print items. For a successful printing project, please
observe the following points:
- Open the PDF files in Adobe Reader Version
6.0 or above. The brochures will not print correctly, and
the fill-in fields may not work at all, if you use an earlier version.
You do not need Adobe Acrobat, the larger program that creates PDF
files; the files are designed to be viewed and printed in Adobe
Reader.
- When you get ready to print using Adobe Reader
6.0, go to the File menu and select Print. On the Print dialog
box that opens up, be sure to select "Page Scaling: None."
Otherwise your brochure may print in such a way that it does not fold
correctly.
- In the Print dialog box, look at the thumbnail
image of your page. If it doesn't look right, click in the "Auto
Rotate and Center" checkbox.
- You should not have to change any of the
"Advanced" printing features.
- Run a test copy. Do the fonts on the
paper look the same as the fonts on your screen? Does text in
boxes fit into the boxes? Are the margins correct? If you
are using Adobe Reader 6.0 and you experience problems with fonts,
margins, text overprinting boundaries or overprinting other text,
contact the LifeRing Service
Center.
- If you have filled in a fill-in field, you can
print the document with the contents of the field, but you cannot save
the document with the field contents.
Can
I edit PDF files?
You cannot edit Adobe Reader documents. However, some Reader documents (such as the LifeRing brochures and most of the flyers) will come with fill-in
fields. On some of the documents the fields have a border around
them. On others they are invisible. You know that the mouse
is in a fill-in field when the cursor turns into a plain vertical line
(|). You can then start typing. You could, for
example, fill in information about your meeting before printing and
duplicating the downloaded file.
Can I copy text and graphics out of a PDF file
and use them in other programs?
Yes. You can easily copy graphics and text from an
Adobe Reader file and paste them into your own editing program to
create customized original documents. To copy text, click on the
"text select" tool on the Reader tool bar. Then
simply mark the text you want with
your mouse and use the standard copy and paste commands to transfer the
text to your editing program.
To copy images, click on the text
select tool and hold the mouse button down. A small menu will
appear, containing an image select tool. Click on that, and
proceed to select, copy and paste in the usual fashion.
What if I have trouble installing the
Reader?
Adobe Reader requires a version 5.0 browser or
above. Both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator
work smoothly with Adobe Reader. You should have your browser
installed and running before you download Adobe Reader for the first
time.
Adobe
Reader is normally a rock-steady, trouble-free program. It is used in millions
of installations to distribute scientific, government, academic, and
business documents over the Web. If you experience technical
difficulty with it, try a fresh installation. If all else fails,
go to www.adobe.com for technical
assistance.
How can I create my own PDF files?
The free
Adobe Reader cannot be used to create (write) files in PDF format. Adobe sells a separate program, Adobe Acrobat, that
creates files for the Reader. Your favorite software vendor
will sell you a copy. If you buy it online, you can help unhooked.com by making your purchase via an unhooked.com affiliate; click
